The Life Of A Disciple
Living Out The Beatitudes
Blessed Are Those Who Hunger And Thirst For Righteousness
For LifeGroup Discussion
Main Theme:
Hunger and thirst are deep, driving desires. Jesus calls us to crave righteousness with that same intensity — not just personal morality, but right relationship with God, right living before others, and longing for God’s justice in the world. Those who live under God’s reign develop this hunger, and Jesus promises that God Himself will satisfy it.
Icebreaker Question:
When was a time you were so hungry or thirsty you couldn’t think about anything else? How does that feeling compare to spiritual hunger?
Group Activity:
Ask group members to rate (1–10) their current hunger for God’s presence, Word, and righteousness in their daily lives.
Break into pairs or small groups and share what has fueled or diminished that hunger in recent weeks.
Come back together to discuss: How can we cultivate deeper hunger as a community?
Read Together:
Matthew 5:6, Psalm 63:1-5, John 7:37-38
Discussion Questions:
How is hungering and thirsting different from casually wanting something?
In your life, what things sometimes dull your hunger for God?
How has God satisfied you in times you’ve earnestly sought Him?
What does it look like for a church to hunger for righteousness together?
How can our hunger for righteousness impact the way we live in society?
Prayer & Response:
Ask God to increase our hunger for Him and His righteousness, removing anything that numbs our appetite for the things of His kingdom.
Invite each person to name one way they want to pursue God’s righteousness more intentionally this week. Pray over these commitments.
For Personal Devotion
This Week’s Shared Practice: Cultivating Holy Hunger
Daily Devotion Rhythm:
Day 1: Read Psalm 42:1–2 — “As the deer pants for streams of water…” Reflect on your own spiritual thirst.
Day 2: Read Matthew 6:33 — “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness…” What areas of life need reordering?
Day 3: Read Isaiah 55:1–2 — God invites the thirsty to come and be satisfied. Spend time responding in prayer.
Day 4: Meditate on John 6:35 — Jesus as the Bread of Life. What does it mean to feed on Him daily?
Day 5: Fast from one meal or one activity (e.g. social media). Use the time to pray and reflect on your hunger for God.
Day 6: Reflect: How have I been pursuing other “food” that doesn’t truly satisfy?
Day 7: Sabbath rest: Thank God for ways He has already filled you with His presence, righteousness and holiness.
Reflection:
What am I hungering and thirsting for most in my current season?
How can I shift my appetite from temporary things to eternal ones?
In what ways has God already been satisfying me that I can celebrate?
Practical Tips:
Keep a simple journal of moments where you sense spiritual hunger or satisfaction during the week.
Replace one routine activity with Scripture reading or prayer.
Ask God daily: “Increase my hunger for You, and teach me to be satisfied in You.”
