The Life Of A Disciple
Living Out The Beatitudes
Blessed Are The Meek
For LifeGroup Discussion
Main Theme:
Meekness is not weakness. The Greek and Hebrew words used to describe the meek characterise both power (the strength-under-control of a tamed horse) and powerlessness (the poor, afflicted and unimportant under oppression). The point is this —whether you have power or are powerless, those who flourish are those grounded in humility, gentleness, and absolute trust in God; and, who from this deep grounded-ness in God, can consistently elevate others above themselves. In a world that prizes self-assertion and dominance, Jesus declares the way of His Kingdom — Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Icebreaker Question:
What’s one situation as of late that really tested your ‘meekness’?
Read Together:
Matthew 5:5, Psalm 37:11, Philippians 2:5–8, Matthew 11:29
Discussion Questions:
How would you define meekness in your own words? How is it different from being passive or weak?
Why do you think Jesus says the meek will inherit the earth? What does this say about how His Kingdom works?
What challenges do we face in cultivating meekness in a culture that rewards self-promotion and aggression?
Look at Philippians 2:5–8. How did Jesus model meekness, and how are we called to follow His example?
Are there areas in your life where you feel tempted to control or dominate rather than trust and yield to God? What might meekness look like in those areas?
For Personal Devotion
Spiritual Rhythm to Practice This Week
Intentionally choose humility in a situation where you’re tempted to assert yourself. Ask: “How can I reflect Christ’s meekness here?”
Journal about any moments where you sensed God inviting you to respond with gentleness instead of control — whether to resist self-promotion or to choose to elevate another.
Encourage everyone to come back next week and share how practicing meekness impacted their relationships or spiritual awareness.
Prayer & Response:
Invite a time of surrender—group members can write down or name aloud areas where they need to yield control and trust God.
Ask for a spirit of humility and restraint. Pray for grace to reflect Christ’s gentleness.
“Jesus, You are the perfect picture of meekness—strong, yet gentle… powerful, yet humble. You submitted to the cross, to the nails and insults of mere men. Teach us to walk in Your way. Forgive us for the times we’ve relied on our own strength and pushed ahead without You. Help us to yield our will, our rights, and our pride, and trust that You will lift us up in due time. Make us a people who embody Your Kingdom through meekness.”
