The Life Of A Disciple
Living Out The Beatitudes
Blessed Are Those Who Mourn
For LifeGroup Discussion
Main Theme:
God draws near to the brokenhearted. Mourning here includes grief over sin, brokenness, and the pain of others. Jesus invites us to a life of honesty before God — where mourning is not weakness, but a gateway to encountering His comfort. This Beatitude does not celebrate grief itself but reveals that in God’s Kingdom, sorrow — over sin, brokenness, and suffering — is not wasted. When we mourn, we open our hearts to receive the deep comfort of God and become carriers of that comfort to others.
Icebreaker Question:
What is a movie or book that unexpectedly moved you to tears? (Get everyone to reflect on their capacity to feel and express emotion, a bridge to deeper conversation.)
Read Together:
Matthew 5:4, Psalm 34:18, Isaiah 61:1-3, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Discussion Questions:
What kind of mourning do you think Jesus was referring to in this Beatitude? (e.g., grief from loss, sorrow over sin, brokenness in the world)
Have you ever experienced God’s comfort during a season of mourning? What did that look like?
What are we often tempted to do with our pain instead of mourning? (e.g., denial, distraction, self-reliance)
How can the church be a community that practices godly mourning and offers real comfort to one another?
Is there any area of your life where you’ve been afraid to bring your sorrow before God? What might He want to do there?
For Personal Devotion
Spiritual Rhythm To Practice This Week
Set aside one quiet moment this week. Be honest—bring before Him sorrow over personal loss, struggles, sin, or even global pain.
End with a declaration of trust in God’s goodness and comfort (Psalm 13 is a model).
Spend time in confession for personal and corporate sin.
Reach out to someone in grief or hardship.
Prayer & Response:
Ask for brokenness over what breaks God’s heart.
Allow space for group prayer and ministry time — especially for those carrying hidden grief or pain. Invite the comfort of the Holy Spirit.
“Lord, thank You that You do not turn away from our sorrow. You are the God who draws near to the brokenhearted. Today, we bring our grief, pain, and even the pain of others before You. Teach us to mourn well — with hope. Pour out Your comfort over every hurting place. And shape us into a people who bring comfort to the mourning, just as You have comforted us.”
