Week 2

A Mustard Seed

Opening Prayer (5 mins)

Begin by asking the Lord to quiet every distraction and soften every heart. As you reflect on the Word, ask God for eyes to see what He is doing, even in small and hidden ways.

Teach us to trust Your Kingdom, Your timing, and Your ways.

In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Opening Questions (10mins)

Share about a time when something small in your life turned out to be more significant than you expected.

When you think of “growth,” do you tend to look for something immediate or gradual? Why?

Discussion Questions

Part 1: Observing the Parable (10 minutes)

  • What stands out to you about the mustard seed being described as “the smallest” yet becoming a tree?

  • Why do you think Jesus chose such a small, almost insignificant image to describe the Kingdom of God?

Part 2: Exploring the Paradox (30 minutes)

  • Read Matthew 13:31-32 together

  • The Kingdom of God begins small, but becomes greater than we expect. Why do you think we often struggle to value “small beginnings”?

  • In what ways might God be working in small or hidden ways that we tend to overlook?

  • Trusting the Process

  • The seed grows over time, not instantly. What does this teach us about how God works in our lives? Have you ever been discouraged because you didn’t see immediate results spiritually? What happened?

  • The End Result - A Place of Shelter

The tree becomes a place where “birds come and perch.” What do you think this represents? How might God want to grow your life into something that blesses and shelters others?

Part 3: Personal Reflection (10 minutes)

  • Where in your life do things feel small, slow, or insignificant right now?

  • Is there something God has started in you that you’ve been tempted to dismiss?

  • What might it look like to trust that God is at work in that area?

Practical Applications

  • Honour the Small

Pay attention to small spiritual practices: time in the Word, a simple prayer, a quiet act of obedience. Don’t despise what seems small, God often begins there.

  • Stay Consistent

Choose consistency over intensity. Commit to a simple, sustainable rhythm (e.g., daily Scripture reading, prayer time)

  • Resist Comparison

Stop measuring your growth against others. Trust that God is uniquely working in your life

  • Speak Life Over What God Has Started

Instead of saying “this is nothing,” begin to say: “God is at work here, even if I don’t fully see it yet.”

Closing Prayer Focus (10 minutes)

Trust: “Lord, help us trust You in the small and unseen.”

Patience: “Teach us to wait without losing faith.”

Growth: “Grow what You have planted in us.”

Surrender: “We offer You every small beginning in our lives.”
