Week Five

Parenting Under The Influence

OPENING PRAYER
Father, before we talk about how we parent, how we work, or how we decide — show us what we are actually under the influence of. Where fear has been driving us, let us see it. Where we have been striving to produce what You already promised, give us rest. And where our picture of You has been shaped more by our experiences than by who You really are, come and correct it. We want to be sons and daughters, not slaves. Amen.

ICE BREAKER

  • What’s a habit, phrase or reaction you’ve caught yourself repeating from your own parents?

  • Growing up, what did your family treat as the measure of a life going well?

SCRIPTURE READING

Genesis 27:5-17

The question the message put to us: When God’s promise is given, isn’t helping God along with the process exactly what we’re supposed to do?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

What was actually driving them

  1. Jacob’s only objection was what if I get caught — not this is wrong. What does it do to a child to be taught, by example, that outcomes matter more than integrity?

  2. The message named six things that shape us — our personality, our sense of worth, what we inherited from our family line, our family experiences, our cultural traditions, and the systems of the world around us. Each can be a place of belonging or a place of bondage. Pick one. Which is it for you, and how do you know?

  3. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved (2 Peter 2:19). What in Singapore promises freedom and delivers slavery?

  4. If someone watched how you spend your time, money and worry — not what you say you believe — what would they conclude you’re under the influence of?

  5. In one order, identity is the starting point. In the other, it’s the prize at the end. What does it do to a person — or to a child — when belovedness has to be earned at the finish line?

  6. The world’s version of worth is human effort and meritocratic metrics; its motivation is fear, anxiety, approval and survival; its result is endless striving. Does that describe anywhere in your life right now?

  7. The message raised three questions worth sitting with: What version of God do I hold? Have my life experiences distorted how I see Him? And what version of God am I passing on to the people around me? Take them one at a time.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Five minutes of silence.

  • What am I trying to secure by my own strategy because I don’t believe He will do it?

  • Whose approval am I actually living for?

  • What picture of God did I inherit — and is it true?

  • If I am a parent: what am I teaching my children about where worth comes from, by how I live rather than what I say?

  • If I am not: who is watching me, and what are they learning?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION FOR THE WEEK

Choose one.

Name the influence. Identify one decision you’re currently making, and ask honestly which order you’re working in — presence first, or outcome first. Write down the answer.

Stop one scheme. Find one place where you’ve been managing, strategising or quietly manipulating an outcome you say you’re trusting God for. Stop that one thing for a week and see what happens.

Speak worth, not performance. Tell one person — a child, a colleague, a friend — something true about who they are that has nothing to do with what they have achieved.

CLOSING PRAYER
Father, we confess how often we have put the promise first and You last — chasing the outcome, building the strategy, and hoping our identity would be waiting for us at the end. Forgive us. Thank You that we did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry Abba, Father. Re-parent us. Show us who You really are. And let what we pass on to those around us be sonship and not slavery. Amen.
